The expression for gratitude we often hear in Hawaii is “Mahalo.” This word however  does not translate directly into “thank you” even though that is a part of the expression. “Mahalo” is a Hawaiian word meaning thanks, gratitude, admiration, praise, esteem, regards, or respects.  Mahalo means “thank you.” If someone does you a kindness, don’t be shy about saying, “Mahalo,” to them. To express an even greater level of thanks, say the common Hawaiian phrase mahalo nui loa. The literal meaning is thank you big and wide. It is like saying thank you very much, instead of just thanks.

In a general sense, mahalo used to express gratitude and admiration. It can also be other contexts, where you may want to express praise or convey your esteem or respect for something, or a group of people. This word can pay your respects to somebody specifically.

Mahalo in a deeper sense

Even though the word mahalo made its way into Hawaiian dictionary long after the word aloha, it has quickly become the second most important word in the language, because of the philosophy behind the word, rooted in gratefulness, appreciation, and compassion.

Hawaiians use this word to express normal, everyday gratitude, as well as to convey deeply-felt appreciation and thankfulness for the world and the people around them.

Mahalo is about respect, appreciation and gratitude; but that means that, even if you do make an honest mistake like this, don’t worry, because mahalo means not allowing honest mistakes to break your relationship and respect for those around you.

Mahalo not said lightly; a way of expressing everyday thanks rooted in a wider, deeper thankfulness for the world around you.

Mahalo means that you’re thankful from the bottom of your heart, even for seemingly small gestures of goodness, and it’s an idea that sits at the very heart of what makes Hawaii great.

First what do I appreciate about someone’s actions. Sometimes just saying Thank You tells the person we appreciate what they did. Saying Thank You is significant. It says I am aware that you did something just to benefit me.

Someone elected to show me kindness and respect. Kindness and respect deserved not a guarantee. Thank you is kindness and respect but we don’t always say Thank You.

Who?

When Tutu is brainstorming her Thank You Gift Idea, Everyone offers kindness and respect but in different variations. Tutu’s Thank You Gift Ideas for the person who has my gratitude. Tutu might give Thank You Gift Ideas to my yard man or my neighbor. Usually for a simple act but an appreciated act. Thank you Gift Ideas for Family or Friends is usually a response to a more significant act of kindness. I appreciate the neighbor taking my trash can in but I appreciate differently my friend cooking me breakfast. Both acts of kindness deserve appreciation.

Why?

What am I saying Thank You for? My Thank You Gift appreciates and respects the person;s act of kindness. A thank you gift should be something that brings your giftee joy. The Neighbor brought in my Garbage can, next time I make home made cookies I gift them some. My Thank you Gift is about their act of kindness. My friend cooked me breakfast really appreciated so I want my Thank You Gift to show I want to reciprocate the act of kindness by being kind to the person I am Thanking by showing my respect for who they are as a person.

What Thank You Gift Idea?

Consider the person who you are expressing Gratitude to for their act of kindness.What do they like or dislike? If they are trying to lose weight your best homemade cookies aren’t reflective of them.

Do they have a hobby or something maybe silly but they enjoy? Tutu had a very intelligent Vet that for me a significant act of kindness. Smart doesn’t always mean gadget friendly haha. He loved to cook and did it amazing but I wanted my Thank You Gift Idea to reflect him, a friend who I am so glad to have, who performs many kind acts for me. My friend loves to play music or cooking videos on his phone when he is cooking. Tutu bought a very nice speaker, with Tata’s help. Tata set it up so my friend just plugged it into his phone and he could listen to what he usually does but with a better speaker than his cell phone. A Thank You Gift that says thank you for your act of kindness and my respect for him because my gift was just for his enjoyment.

Tutu’s Mahalo Gift Ideas

Tutu had a nice neighbor I didn’t really know who did some acts of kindness when my cat got out. A time where Social Media is beneficial. I looked on her Facebook page and she had a few posts about liking teas. Tutu’s helpers in Hawaii put together a nice Hawaii Tropical Teas Gift Box and sent it to her. She was delighted and surprised. Another neighbor gave me some plants free from her yard, my Ohana from Tutu’s Hawaii 808 created a little Mahalo Gift Basket Idea of a few Tropical Island Jellies. The neighbor was originally from another Tropical Island so for her a jar of Guava Jelly was a reminder of childhood. Focusing on the Giftee sometimes is an expensive gift idea sometimes not expensive. Tutu’s goal is not how much or how little I spend, it is how much joy did I give.

Your Thank You Gift Idea is about doing something kind and respectful to someone who gifted me an act of kindness and respect. The friend who likes to cook, gave me the gift of cooking a meal for me but he cooks something he hopes I like and Enjoy. Tutu’s intent of a Mahalo Gift Idea is what Gift Idea gives my Giftee joy.

Mahalo Gift Ideas Budgets

Tutu isn’t suggesting ignore your budget. We all have to live with budgets. Tutu applies her budget after I think of a Gift Idea that would bring enjoyment. When I liked Tata’s idea of a speaker for my friend. Tata said options are in this price range. I knew what amount I had budgeted again though I also Thought of the Giftee. Obviously if he was using his cell phone speaker, he liked his music but he enjoyed his ease of use to exceptional speaker. We decided on a price range that allowed upgrading the speaker while not complicating the task. II was within my budget, he uses the speaker everyday, goal accomplished. Your budget is a wheel on your car but not the steering wheel.

Your Thank You Giftee should feel your Mahalo Gift reflects your appreciation of their act of kindness not a reflection of the size oof my budget. Thinking of something special doesn’t cost any of your budgeted money, it costs budgeted time of thinking of the giftee.
